Economic Collapse: The Path to Global Famine

“We read and hear news reports of economic difficulties, but they seem so far away or so academic that we never personalize the problems. Yet, economic disasters affect real live people—people just like you and me. These people never believed it could ever happen to them, but it did, and similar experiences will continue to happen to others…Of course we hope nothing similar will ever happen to any of us, but that wish may not necessarily come true, for no one’s world is ever absolutely safe…

“As we witness the current economic turmoil in the world about us with its riots, starvation, and political upheaval occurring in nation after nation, many of us are completely oblivious to what the average individual in those nations is truly experiencing. Most of us have no real appreciation as to what it feels like to truly be without food, shelter, clothing and the basic necessities of life, and further, no place to turn for help. Reading about another’s life experiences can add a dimension to our understanding, but it will be nothing like having personally lived through such [an] overwhelming crisis.” (Prophetic Statements on Food Storage for Latter-day Saints, pp. 165, 166)

“Too often we bask in our comfortable complacency and rationalize that the ravages of war, economic disaster, famine, and earthquake cannot happen here. Those who believe this are either not acquainted with the revelations of the Lord, or they do not believe them. Those who smugly think these calamities will not happen, that they somehow will be set aside because of the righteousness of the [members of the Church], are deceived and will rue the day they harbored such a delusion.” - Ezra Taft Benson

Bishop Koyle Vision:

He was told by the messenger that there would be a great crash in the land before the period of famine began. This crash would be brought about by prices going up, which condition was illustrated to him as being like a person on high stilts. When prices became extremely high, something happened in the land like knocking the stilts from under the person and down came everything. Businesses closed down, labor was thrown out of work, people were hungry, and great tribulations were in the land.

“I urge you, brethren, to look to the condition of your finances. I urge you to be modest in your expenditures; discipline yourselves in your purchases to avoid debt to the extent possible. Pay off debt as quickly as you can, and free yourselves from bondage. - Gordon B Hinkley

"Brethren and sisters, let me say in closing that we have it of record, that the prophet Joseph Smith said the time would come when, through secret organizations taking the law into their own hands, not being governed by law or by due process of law, but becoming a law unto themselves, when, by those disintegrating activities, the Constitution of the United States would be so torn and rent asunder, and life and property and peace and security would be held of so little value, that the Constitution would, as it were, hang by a thread." - Conference Report, Charles W. Nibley, October 1923

The vision by Church Patriarch Charles D Evans makes reference to it:

"At this juncture I saw a banner floating in air whereupon was written the words, 'BANKRUPTCY, FAMINE, FLOODS, FIRE, CYCLONES, BLOOD, PLAGUE.'”

Elder David A. Bednar Answers Questions at The National Press Club

Orson Pratt

We are living in this Territory, comparatively at peace, but unless the Latter-day Saints live according to the light which God has revealed to them, they cannot escape. If God sends judgments upon the nations, he will send them upon us... If he visits the inhabitants of the earth with pestilence and blood, he will visit us in a similar manner unless we keep his commandments. If the inhabitants of the earth who know not God are to perish because of their wickedness, how much more will he visit those who have greater light and knowledge if they will not keep his commandments? The Lord sent forth the destroyer in ancient times to lay waste the firstborn of the Egyptians, pointing out the means by which his people might escape, and those who failed to do as they were commanded had no promise of being preserved; so in these days when judgments come, they will begin among his Saints, and those who have not attended to the word of wisdom and the laws of life that he has pointed out and have no claim to mercy and favor. Wresting the Scriptures

In 2 Peter chapter 3 states that some in the latter days will doubt the Second Coming and it also speaks of those who are led to their own destruction due to wresting the scriptures.

2 Peter 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness.

18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

The secret to understanding Paul-or for that matter Peter, James, or John-is the same secret that Nephi gave us for understanding Isaiah. For Nephi, understanding Isaiah was easy because his prophecies 'are plain unto all those that are filled with the spirit of prophecy' (2 Nephi 25:4). By this spirit, even Paul is easy to understand. Without it the 'unlearned and unstable wrest' the scriptures 'unto their own destruction.'

Now I need not rehearse the matter; what I have said may suffice. Behold, the scriptures are before you; if ye will wrest them it shall be to your own destruction. (Alma 13:20)

Not everything in the scriptures is easy to understand. The ancient prophets like Isaiah, Ezekiel, etc. can be difficult and misinterpreting them can be dangerous. Peter warned of the writings of Paul (2 Peter 3:16). Wresting the scriptures unto destruction has become an art form whose master is Satan. He seems to have perfected the technique which is to use "the philosophies of men mingled with scripture."

"Webster states that to wrest is to 'turn or twist; to ascribe a wrong meaning or intent to; to deliberately misinterpret or distort.' The Lord warned against wresting the scriptures (D&C 10:63).

Doctrine and Covenants 10:57 Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I came unto mine own, and mine own received me not.

58 I am the light which shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not.

59 I am he who said—Other sheep have I which are not of this fold—unto my disciples, and many there were that understood me not.

60 And I will show unto this people that I had other sheep, and that they were a branch of the house of Jacob;

61 And I will bring to light their marvelous works, which they did in my name;

62 Yea, and I will also bring to light my gospel which was ministered unto them, and, behold, they shall not deny that which you have received, but they shall build it up, and shall bring to light the true points of my doctrine, yea, and the only doctrine which is in me.

63 And this I do that I may establish my gospel, that there may not be so much contention; yea, Satan doth stir up the hearts of the people to contention concerning the points of my doctrine; and in these things they do err, for they do wrest the scriptures and do not understand them.

Russell M. Nelson:

Divine doctrine of the Church is the prime target of attack by the spiritually contentious. Well do I remember a friend who would routinely sow seeds of contention in Church classes. His assaults would invariably be preceded by this predictable comment: “let me play the role of devil’s advocate.” Recently he passed away. One day he will stand before the Lord in judgment. Then, I wonder, will my friend’s predictable comment again be repeated?

…Dissecting doctrine in a controversial way in order to draw attention to oneself is not pleasing to the Lord. (“The Canker of Contention,” Ensign, May 1989, 70)

President Joseph Fielding Smith gave the following counsel regarding wresting or misinterpreting the scriptures:

'It is wrong to take one passage of scripture and isolate it from all other teachings dealing with the same subject. We should bring together all that has been said by authority on the question. If we were to make a photograph, it would be necessary for all of your rays of light to be focused properly on the subject. If this were not done then a blurred picture would be the result. This is the case when we try to obtain a mental picture, when we have only a portion of the facts dealing with the subject we are considering.' (DS 2:95.)

"The Prophet Joseph gave the key whereby scriptures are to be interpreted: 'What is the rule of interpretation?' he asked. 'Just no interpretation at all. Understand it precisely as it reads. I have a key by which I understand the scriptures. I enquire, what was the question which drew out the answer, or caused Jesus to utter the parable?' (TPJS, p. 276-7)." (Hoyt W. Brewster, Jr., Doctrine and Covenants Encyclopedia, p. 651)

LeGrand Richards:

"Paul's statement has been very much misunderstood, by both preachers and laity. Preachers have freely taught that salvation might be obtained as by the snap of the fingers, as one prominent minister expressed himself to the writer; that salvation comes through a lip confession of a belief in Christ, even though not accompanied by obedience to his commandments and works of righteousness. Such doctrine is obviously out of harmony with truth.

"It was such interpretations of the scripture that Peter warned against when he said: '. . . which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.' (2 Peter 3:16.)

"Many have thus been led astray and have contented themselves with a lip confession of faith, to their own destruction.

"The enemy of all righteousness could not hope to succeed more effectively in thwarting the purposes of the Master and his gospel than to persuade men that all the blessings the Lord has prepared, through his grace, for his children can be obtained through their lip acknowledgment that he is the Christ." The Greatest Worldwide Threat

Ezra Taft Benson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles,
in Conference Report, October 1961, p. 69–72

Concerning the United States, the Lord revealed to his prophets that its greatest threat would be a vast, worldwide “secret combination” which would not only threaten the United States but also seek to “overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries.” (Ether 8:25.) . . .

In connection with attack on the United States, the Lord told the Prophet Joseph Smith there would be an attempt to overthrow the country by destroying the Constitution. Joseph Smith predicted that the time would come when the Constitution would hang, as it were, by a thread, and at that time “this people will step forth and save it from the threatened destruction.” (Journal History, Brigham Young’s Speech, July 4, 1854.) . . .

One of the most urgent, heart-stirring appeals made by Moroni as he closed the Book of Mormon was addressed to the gentile nations of the last days. He foresaw the rise of a great world-wide secret combination among the gentiles which “. . . seeketh to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries; . . .” (Ether 8:25.) He warned each gentile nation of the last days to purge itself of this gigantic criminal conspiracy which would seek to rule the world.

The prophets, in our day, have continually warned us of these internal threats in our midst—that our greatest threat from socialistic-communism lies within our country. Brethren and sisters, we don’t need a prophet—we have one—we need a listening ear. And if we do not listen and heed, then, as the Doctrine and Covenants states, “. . . the day cometh that they who will not hear the voice of the Lord, neither the voice of his servants, neither give heed to the words of the prophets and apostles, shall be cut off from among the people.” (D&C 1:14.)

The prophets have said that these threats are among us. The Prophet Moroni, viewing our day, said, “Wherefore the Lord commandeth you, when ye shall see these things come among you that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation.” (Ether 8:24.)

Unfortunately, our nation has not treated the socialistic-communist conspiracy as “treasonable to our free institutions,” as the First Presidency pointed out in a signed 1936 statement. If we continue to uphold communism by not making it treasonable, our land shall be destroyed, for the Lord has said that “. . . whatsoever nation shall uphold such secret combinations, to get power and gain, until they shall spread over the nation, behold they shall be destroyed; . . .” (Ether 8:22.)

The Prophet Moroni described how the secret combination would take over a country and then fight the work of God, persecute the righteous, and murder those who resisted. Moroni therefore proceeded to describe the workings of the ancient “secret combinations” so that modern man could recognize this great political conspiracy in the last days: “Wherefore, O ye Gentiles, it is wisdom in God that these things should be shown unto you, that thereby ye may repent of your sins, and suffer not that these murderous combinations shall get above you, which are built up to get power and gain—and the work, yea, even the work of destruction come upon you.

“Wherefore, the Lord commandeth you, when ye shall see these things come among you that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation, because of this secret combination which shall be among you...

“For it cometh to pass that whoso buildeth it up seeketh to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations and countries; and it bringeth to pass the destruction of all people, for it is built up by the devil, who is the father of all lies; . . .” (Ether 8:23-25.)

The Prophet Moroni seemed greatly exercised lest in our day we might not be able to recognize the startling fact that the same secret societies which destroyed the Jaredites and decimated numerous kingdoms of both Nephites and Lamanites would be precisely the same form of criminal conspiracy which would rise up among the gentile nations in this day.

The stratagems of the leaders of these societies are amazingly familiar to anyone who has studied the tactics of modern communist leaders.

The Lord has declared that before the second coming of Christ it will be necessary to “. . . destroy the secret works of darkness, . . .” in order to preserve the land of Zion—the Americas. (2 Nephi 10:11-16.)

The world-wide secret conspiracy which has risen up in our day to fulfill these prophecies is easily identified. President McKay has left no room for doubt as to what attitude Latter-day Saints should take toward the modern “secret combinations” of conspiratorial communism. In a lengthy statement on communism, he said:

“. . . Latter-day Saints should have nothing to do with the secret combinations and groups antagonistic to the constitutional law of the land, which the Lord ‘suffered to be established,’ and which ‘should be maintained for the rights and protection of all flesh according to just and holy principles.’.” (Gospel Ideals, by David O. McKay p. 306).

The Abomination of Desolation

Part 1: What is “The Abomination of Desolation?”

Daniel spoke prophetically of a day when there would be “the abomination that maketh desolate” (Dan. 11:31; 12:11), and the phrase was recoined in New Testament times to say “the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet” (Matt. 24:15).

Conditions of desolation, born of abomination and wickedness, were to occur twice in fulfillment of Daniel’s words. The first was to be when the Roman legions under Titus, in A.D. 70, laid siege to Jerusalem (Matt. 24:15; JS—M 1:12). Speaking of the last days, of the days following the Restoration of the gospel and its declaration “for a witness unto all nations,” our Lord said: “And again shall the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, be fulfilled” (JS—M 1:31–32). That is, Jerusalem again will be under siege.

Part 2: The First Fulfillment

Prophecies often have dual fulfillments, the historical one being a "type" or foreshadowing of the future one. Daniel was well-acquainted with "the abomination that maketh desolate," for he had already experienced it when he was taken captive by the armies of the New Babylonian Empire who had conquered Jerusalem. He foretold of a time far in his own future when the abominations of the Jews and their refusal to forsake all gods, but Jehovah would again cause their city to be surrounded and destroyed, their temple once again razed to the ground.

Jesus told His Apostles that the temple would be utterly destroyed. He gave them a sign which would precede that destruction.

Matthew 24:15-18
15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

16 Then let them which be in Judæa flee into the mountains:

17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:

18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

Part 3: The Coming Fulfillment

When asked by His Apostles about the signs of His return, Jesus warned that Jerusalem would once more find itself surrounded by armies' intent on conquest, and that this state of siege would be brought about by the refusal of the Jews to follow Messiah, the incarnate Jehovah, who is Jesus Christ.

This final siege of Jerusalem is often called Armageddon, named for Har-Megiddo, the valley wherein all the armies of the earth shall gather to annihilate the city.

How can we know the sign is about to be fulfilled again? There are three conditions which must prevail. First, it will come at a time when the whole world is in commotion.

Doctrine and Covenants 45:26, 31
26 And in that day shall be heard of wars and rumors of wars, and the whole earth shall be in commotion, and men’s hearts shall fail them, and they shall say that Christ delayeth his coming until the end of the earth.

31 And there shall be men standing in that generation, that shall not pass until they shall see an overflowing scourge; for a desolating sickness shall cover the land.

President Russell M Nelson said:
"As followers of Jesus Christ, living in a day when the COVID-19 pandemic has put the whole world in commotion, let us not just talk of Christ or preach of Christ or employ a symbol representing Christ. Let us put our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ into action!" - (Opening the Heavens for Help)

In April 2021, he further reinforced this identification:

Often when the Lord warns us about the perils of the last days, He counsels thus: “Stand ye in holy places, and be not moved.” - (What We Are Learning and Will Never Forget.)

The 2 there denotes a footnote to the talk, which is:

Matthew 24:15
15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

So the whole world is in commotion, and the “desolating sickness” has struck, but what of the final sign, the cessation of the daily sacrifice?

Daniel 12:11
11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

Only Latter-Day Saints can understand this sign without explanation, because only we build temples. On March 25, 2020 the Prophet announced that all temples would close at the end of business that day. The daily sacrifice, as it were, had been taken away. If you count 1290 days from March 25, 2020, the day of closing, you get October 7, 2023.

I find it interesting that on the day of October 7th, 2023, Israel was attacked.

Prophetic Warning and Judgment

In the scriptures, the pattern for prophetic warning is that it accompanies destruction. When the Lord is about to destroy his disavowed people, and repentance is the only thing standing between them and being utterly wiped out, he will send prophetic warning.

"...repent, or the great city Jerusalem must be destroyed" (1 Nephi 1:4)

"...repent, or he will utterly destroy you from off the face of the earth;" (Alma 9:12)

"...Except ye repent, thus saith the Lord, ye shall be smitten even unto destruction." (Helaman 10:14)

"Thou also sayest, except we repent we shall perish..." (Alma 21:6)

"...if men do not repent, I will send in the floods upon them" (Moses 8:17)

"...Repent, lest I come out and smite them with a curse and they die" (Moses 7:10)

There does seem to be some variability in how much warning a prophet might give. Jeremiah gave at least 10 years of warning. Abinadi provided 2-3 years of warning. Alma and Amulek provided around a year of warning to the people of Ammonihah.

When layering the scriptures on top of our present situation, it gets tricky for a few reasons:

1- We don't actually know when the day of judgment starts.

2- The day of judgment may not necessarily begin with the mass genocide of the Lord's people. Conditions may just be really bad for a while first.

3- When we ask whether the prophet is properly warning us, we have to qualify that question with what precisely he should be warning us of. Should he be warning us to "repent or be destroyed" at this juncture? Should he be warning us of something else? Recall the pattern in scriptures is that prophets only issue the warning when they're a few years off from being completely obliterated as a people.

Eventual Warning

In Isaiah's chronology of events, the Lord promises us a "repent or be destroyed" warning will eventually come, but it won't be until after tribulation has already started. The warning is issued to a few different groups, but "Egypt" and "Moab" are the only two groups which receive a three-year warning.

"And the Lord said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia;" (Isaiah 20:3)

"But now the Lord hath spoken, saying, Within three years, as the years of an hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be contemned, with all that great multitude; and the remnant shall be very small and feeble." (Isaiah 16:14)

It becomes clear throughout Isaiah that Egypt serves as a type for America. They are the military might of the world that all other nations rely on (Isaiah 30:2; 31:1; 36:6, 9), a hub for idolatry (Isaiah 19:1) and are the wealth and commerce capital to the world (Isaiah 45:14). Meanwhile, Moab is a place full of churches and temples (Isaiah 15:2) and Moab's people have food storage (Isaiah 15:7). It seems plausible that Moab either represents Utah or the Church. These two groups will be given a three-year warning, though other places will likewise receive a similar warning as well (Isaiah 21:16).

Warning to America

The warning we're, by far, given the most details on is the final warning to America. Of this event, Brigham Young said:

“When our brethren in the Quorum of the 12 shall be called to the courts of Washington to give an account of the position of the Latter Day Saints…the world will be in commotion and the Lord will have something to work upon. It will be after this when our Savior and others will make their appearance on the earth among the Latter Day Saints.”

– Brigham Young (Recorded in a letter from Amanda H. Wilcox to Susie Young Gates, March, 11, 1904; Historical Dept. of the Church)

Note that Brigham Young prophesied that "the world will be in commotion" when this happens. This accords very much with the prophecy of Isaiah. The warning to America will not happen until after the day of tribulation has already started and the world is thrown into commotion. Isaiah spoke on this subject at length too. In Isaiah 7 (and 2 Nephi 17) we're given a type for this exchange between King Ahaz and Isaiah (types for our then-president and the Lord's servant who will be charged with warning America). Without quoting the entire chapter, here's a brief overview of the exchange between the prophet and the president:

1- The background of this event is foreign nations would be conspiring to overthrow the "king" of America and place a puppet-ruler on the throne (Isaiah 7:4-7).

2- The ruler of America is told by the man of God that the alliances or secret combinations seeking to overthrow him and install a puppet ruler will be destroyed within the next few years before they can carry out their plans (Isaiah 7:8-9)

3- The prophet commands the king to ask the Lord for a sign, to which the king refuses (Isaiah 7:10-12)

4- The prophet rebukes the king who won't ask for a sign, giving him a sign anyway, prophesying to him of the ensuing invasion of America by the proverbial King of Assyria (Isaiah 7:13-25)

5- In his prophecy before the ruler of America, he not only chastises the president (Isaiah 7:13,17) and secret combinations (Isaiah 7:4-7), but also the people of America (Isaiah 7:17).

There's a lot we still don't know concerning how or why this event will take place. Brigham Young suggests it will be "to give an account of the position of the latter-day Saints." Their position relative to what? The quote, wherever it is found, tends to be truncated right in the place where it might tell you the answer to that, which proves problematic. It is also difficult to find an original source of the quote, though it is certainly cited correctly.

It is worth pointing out as well that in Isaiah's chronology of events, society collapses in chapter 3, the Lord removing the literal and figurative "bread and water" of society (Isaiah 3:1-3). Sometime after that is when we get this typological exchange between King Ahaz and Isaiah signifying that events have to get bad before a prophet will get called up to Washington.

Concluding Thoughts

While the prophets have warned us to get food storage in order, get out of debt, gain a testimony, learn to be guided by the Holy Ghost, get temple worthy, etc. we are fundamentally lacking a "repent or be destroyed" blunt-force prophecy like what we find in the scriptures. Both those who feel we have been sufficiently warned and those who feel we haven't been each partially right in their own way. On one hand, we may be close to judgments being poured out, but are we in immediate danger of extinction if judgment started tomorrow? On the other hand, does what we see in Conference match the severity and urgency of warnings we see given in the scriptures?

The scriptures promise us three years of warning before the King of Assyria commits mass-genocide against the United States (and brings some into bondage). It will be blunt. This prophecy will gain national (and possibly international) attention (Isaiah 52:10), so we will be left without excuse. We are not promised however that we will receive any type of warning before economic collapse, famine, drought, civil war, or ruthless dictators seize power over America (Isaiah 19:4). Rest assured: The Lord will not destroy us until he has sent a prophet to call us to repentance.
